Description
A’ Mhargaidh (The Marketplace)
This basket was woven in the grounds of Tantallon Castle while I was dressed as a medieval peasant. It is inspired by the many medieval era paintings I have trawled through recently to research historical basket styles – many feature a marketplace seller with a wide, shallow and strong basket to display and transport their wares. This one was born with a more traditional slewed English base, and a continental style false foot (which is replaceable if you ever need to), so it is a hybrid of a few countries basketry styles!
In these modern times you could use it for the same purpose if you sell at markets, or for the tattie harvest, or even a nice fruit bowl – it’s a pretty versatile basket.
